BGL Group jumps 18 places in Britain’s 250 largest mid-market private companies

PETERBOROUGH-based BGL Group, one of the UK’s leading personal lines insurance groups, has been named as one of the largest mid-market private companies in Britain, according to the latest Sunday Times Top Track 250 league table published at the weekend.

The annual table, now in its eighth year, ranks Britain’s 250 mid-market companies by sales based on their latest available audited accounts – in BGL’s case, the 2010/11 financial year. Peterborough-based BGL Group has more than 3.9 million customers and was rated 69th in the list, up from 87th place last year. This puts it in the top five companies in the east of England and higher up the table than other leading brands such as Travelodge, Telegraph Media Group and Center Parcs Holiday Resorts.

A spokesperson for the BGL Group said: “Against a backdrop of difficult market conditions we are pleased that BGL remains high within the UK’s top 250 mid-market companies. Our entrepreneurial and innovative approach to business has ensured that we remain profitable and continue growing our workforce. We first entered the table at number 227th back in 2007, so we are delighted to have risen up the ranks so significantly.”

The Sunday Times supplement highlighted how financial challenges have led many mid-market UK companies to seek opportunities abroad. In the past two years BGL Group has added the French price comparison business, www.LesFurets.com and the Dutch price comparison business, www.Verzekeringssite.nl to its brand portfolio.
