Peterborough-based Sweco UK leaps 50 places to 46 in top 100 civil engineering firms list

PETERBOROUGH-based Sweco UK has leapt 50 places to number 46 in a league table ranking the nation’s top 100 civil engineering consultancies just 14 months after its launch.

Carried out by leading industry title New Civil Engineer, the NCE100 is a totally independent, authoritative assessment of what it means to be an excellent civil engineering practice.

Sweco acquired engineering consultancy Grontmij in October 2015 and rebranded its UK operations in April 2016. Sweco inherited Grontmij’s position of 96 in last year’s NCE100 and now 12 months later the consultancy has risen to number 46.

The assessment is made against New Civil Engineer’s five core pillars; the competencies and passions sought in outstanding firms: technical excellence; technology leadership; talent development; action on equality and global leadership. Sitting on top of that is an assessment of a key behaviour sought in civil engineering today: collaboration.

Analysis of a comprehensive company questionnaire is combined with the scoring of independent industry judges who scrutinise written submissions and then interview business leaders from the highest performing companies. This information is then combined with the views of staff themselves – obtained from a confidential survey of almost 6,500 engineers working for NCE100 companies.

Commenting on the outcome, Sweco UK managing director, Max Joy, said, “We are immensely proud to have made such a big impact in a relatively short space of time both within the industry and with our people and clients.

“We have a distinct collaborative multi-disciplinary approach at Sweco which sets us apart because it inspires people to achieve great things together.

“This is allowing us to attract and retain excellent engineers, expand our work with existing clients and secure new business all with the overarching objective of delivering sustainable, profitable growth.”

Sweco UK employs 800 people and provides multi-disciplinary services covering buildings, energy, environment, transportation and water and asset management.

The consultancy is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sweco, which has its head office in Stockholm, Sweden. The consultancy is the European leader, has 14,500 employees, sales of approximately £1.4bn and is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm.
