Peterborough’s new gas-fired power plant goes online

THE new fast response power plant in Peterborough is finished, according to owners Centrica.

The 50MW facility has been designed to respond to peaks in demand within two minutes and is capable of producing enough power to meet the needs of 50,000 homes – two thirds of all the households in Peterborough.

The plant has been built on land adjacent to Centrica’s existing gas-fired power station and forms part of a £180m investment into a series of flexible generation and storage facilities across the country.

Mark Futyan, distributed power systems director at Centrica Business Solutions, said, “We’re delighted to have reached this final milestone and to be in the position to open the new plant. This is an important investment that will help secure supplies for local homes and ultimately support the increase of renewable energy generation.”

Managed from Centrica’s new Energy Control Centre at the existing power station, the plant will typically run for a few hours a day. A second 50MW plant in Brigg, North East Lincolnshire has also been completed today, 5 October 2018.
