Thomas Cook closure: what’s the city’s job market look like for Peterborough workers?

PETERBOROUGH Business tends to focus on the positive business stories from around the city but with the eyes of the world on us in the light of the Thomas Cook collapse, we thought we would look at the city’s current job market and its impact on those affected by this sad event.

Peterborough has a population of 196,640 and it is one of the fastest-growing cities in the UK. Unfortunately, average salaries in Peterborough are already below the national average at £30,335 (UK average £34,310). The current unemployment rate in the south-east is 3.2 per cent, 0.6 per cent below national average.

There are currently 3,182 live job adverts in Peterborough – the lowest volume in the south-east. Vacancies have fallen from 3,946 in January 2019 to 3,001 in August (that’s a 24 per cent decrease). Up to 1,000 jobs could be lost with the closure of Thomas Cook and right now, those workers will be looking at vacancies among these top employers in the region.
